There are many avenues you can take to create your first website. I recommend picking a template or two, adding some cool effects or features, buy the Pro CSS & HTML design patterns book I mentioned above, (that book alone will take your design prowess and understanding of (X)HTML, CSS & Java to another level) & just start playing around. Remember to keep it real & make it FUN! Or k.i.s.s ("keep it simple stupid").. And when you run into problems don't get discouraged, ask your questions in a forum (like ours) or google it. And always, always, always display - "patience my son or daughter"...
Templates offer an easy way to get started with little knowledge of CSS or HTML. You don't have to be a genius to manipulate a template for your desired result. There are a lot of websites that offer free templates with a multitude of layout designs, below are a few links to quality FREE template sites..
Online generators are a great way to jazz-up a template, add a drop-down menu, add flash or java-script, the options are limit-less. There are many script generators available online for all sorts of different effects. If you can imagine it & your willing to google it until the cows come home you'll find it. Recommended reading
The only thing I recommend you buy are a couple of easily obtained, low priced books that you can buy online. I've found them to be cheapest at Amazon. I'd recommend starting out with pro design patterns, buy them one at a time to spread your expenses out, soak-up the knowledge in each book & move on to the next.
